Constructing the Flesh:
Discourses on Gender and Disability in Performance in Mexico

In this live event hosted by the AIM Lab (Access in the Making) at Concordia and the Hemispheric Encounters Partnership (SSHRC), choreographer Stephanie Sherman*, director Juan Carlos Saavedra**, the blind actors of Teatro Ciego and graduates of the Centro Universitario de Teatro of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) will present and discuss three performance works that question gender and disability constructs in Mexico: 

  • The film of “Construyendo la carne (2018)": A dance-theater piece in collaboration with the UNAM and Teatro Ciego as part of Dr. Stephanie Sherman’s Postdoctoral Fulbright Award.
  • “Caída Libre”: A video dance piece created during the pandemic.
  • “Construyo mi carne”: 6 live short monologues on gender and identity by the members of “Construyendo la carne.”

En este evento organizado por Laboratorio AIM (Concordia) y Encuentros Hemisféricos, coreógrafa Stephanie Sherman, director Juan Carlos Saavedra*, los actores ciegos de Teatro Ciego y egresados del Centro Universitario de Teatro de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) presentarán y hablarán de tres obras performáticas que cuestionan constructos de género y discapacidad en México.

  • La grabación de “Construyendo la carne (2018):” Pieza de danza-teatro en colaboración con la UNAM y Teatro Ciego como parte de la beca post doctoral  Fulbright Award de la Doctora Stephanie Sherman.
  • “Caída Libre:” Video danza creada durante la pandemia. 
  • “Construyo mi carne:” 6 monólogos cortos en vivo sobre género e identidad por los miembros de “Construyendo la carne”
