AIM Reads: Entering the War Zone

In 2021, the AIM formed a book club to read Donna Kahérakwas Goodleaf’s book, Entering the war zone (1995). We were ten people in the club, including Prakash Krishnan, Jessie Stainton, Diego Bravo, Raphaëlle Bessette-Viens, Nicholas Goberdhan, Amy Mazowita, Sabrina Ward-Kimola, Yolanda Muñoz, Dresda Mendez, and Arseli Dokumacı, and our book club was coordinated by our core member Diego Bravo.

Our book club ran from December 2021 to February 2022. We committed to read the book chapter by chapter and after we finished each, we held a collective meeting on Fridays from 1-2 pm. Before each meeting, our book club coordinator, Diego, asked us to bring our reflections on the chapter we read for the week. Our reflections were expressed beyond words during our “round table” discussion. We were able to come up with a creation (ranging from a painting, poetry to a crochet inspired by ideas left by each chapter). These items and pieces helped us articulate and prompt the flow of ideas for discussion on what the book made us think and feel without having to rely on words solely.
